Ayurveda has two basic aims; First, to sustain the health of healthy people and Second, to treat illness and disease of the patient.
Thus, the ayurvedic definition of health by Sushruta: One whose doshas are in balance, whose appetite is good, whose dhatus are functioning normally, whose malas are in balance, and whose physiology, mind and senses are always full of bliss, is called a healthy person.
As “Prevention is better than Cure”, and this is possible through the ancient Indian medicine of Ayurveda. This science teaches the art of living, a healthy and wholesome life. Ayurveda emphasises that primarily there are three doshas (tridosh - Tridoshas define the three fundamental energies or principles which govern the function of our bodies) and any imbalance in the basic attribute of these three doshas lead to various diseases. Among this, Vata provides the essential motion for all bodily processes and is extremely vital for health. According to the laws of nature, in summer, there is an outbreak Vata Dosha in the body. At that time, the Vata in the body is controlled by the Basti chikitsa. It gives natural or successive direction to vitiated Vata Dosha. Automatically reduces joint pain, swelling, constipation. Due to the motion (quality of Vata), it is the motive force behind the elimination and retention of faeces, urine, bile, and other excreta. When it is vitiated it drives Pitta and Kapha (from their natural site of origin) into the body and creates new chronic diseases by taking them to the source where there is already deformity has been formed. Therefore, even a healthy person should be medicated by Basti during the rainy season (June, July) so that he/she could able to sustain the health & does not get any disease in the future. Also, in autumn (September, October) purgation should be done to drain the Vitiated Pitta, Ayurvedic literature suggests in these conditions the administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative. Purgation i.e., Virechan help to relieve the vitiated pitta causing the bile disturbance in the body. And in spring (February, March) Vaman (Scientific Emesis) is therapeutic process to eliminate the vitiated kapha. Balancing the doshas in the body does not cause illness & boosts the immunity of body.
